Black Cat is a book that city kids can relate to, but it also paints a vivid picture of city life for students living in rural areas. For both kinds of classes, students could re-write the story so the cat is wandering around their own neighborhoods.
Participle phrases play a large part in the verses of Black Cat. This book could be used at an upper elementary or middle school level as an engaging example.
